Here’s the First in the series of Next Generation Product/Service from Telecom Domain by a Delhi NCR based Company Knowlarity. Knowlarity (P) Ltd is a pioneer in automated voice technologies with an inexpensive hosted custom voice solution that organizations use to make personalized calls to lacs of their customers in a day. The technology can be used for both – managing personalized relationship with existing customers or in prospecting new customers. Some of the typical applications include retail banks sending reminders to its customers about EMI date, agri-businesses using telephone as an inexpensive tele-newsletter or political parties and politicians reaching out to the voters. Its product allows to Send customers personalized messages, record their responses and conduct analysis to uncover new business opportunities.

Based on the similar technology they have 3 products namely supercaller, superfax & superfone.

1) SuperFax.in

With Superfax you can receive fax in your email, Receive SMS alerts for Incoming Fax and Send Fax as email. The primary advantages include lines are never busy never down, SMS alert received , saved in mail box for future reference and never out of page and electricity

How does it work ?

for eg: if you want to send a fax to 011-2371212 then send an email from your account to 112371212@superfax.in , attach a pdf or word doc and the fax will be sent and confirmation email received.

2) SuperCaller.in & Superfone.in

SuperCaller and SuperFone apps seems to be a voice based response system , wherein an automated voice call is made to the mobile numbers and they reply back on voice, then that response is analyzed and provided as results.

Related Concerns would be whether this app is ip based or Telecom Operators dependent and if Operator dependent then how many operators is it connected to presently else if IP based then 3G come soon……

India is all geared up to launch 3G Services by the end of 2010 and auctions for the spectrum are on right now.

3G Services allows around 14mbps of downlink and 5.8 mbps of uplink capacities on mobile.India’s potential consumers base has created buzz in town and is among one of the reasons for sky rocketing bids for 3G Spectrum which has crossed 9500 crore mark and 104 rounds of bidding with a base price of 3500 crores.

3G bidding process has been especially designed to earn more value in favor of the govt., leading the way are circles like mumbai & Delhi touching almost 1500 crores each. The bidding process would continue till demand == supply.

Companies working on to leverage besides voice space can be broadly classified as :

1. External Space (Apple or the Google way, Videocon in case of India) : Wherein companies are offering hardware with related offerings and looking towards Mobile web to work wonders. This would involve in most cases no or minimal tie ups with Telecoms.

2. Internal Space: These are the companies that will be depend on Telecom Infrastructure and user base to create business models and products.

Currently a large number companies working in Telecom space (Both Internal & External Models ) are awaiting the ingress of 3G to launch their 3G Specific offering be it live video streaming , video calls , one click games (cloud gaming ) or more efficient MMS services besides other innovative products based on IP. Next 6-12 months after 3G launch would be very crucial for companies hoping to turn around their fortunes with the VAS Services. The key would be an evolved Business Model and Sustainability , as one could have great product but might lack mass appeal.

The VAS Services could be broadly categorized into

1. M-Commerce : Holds loads of potential and would be the next big thing for Telecom to sustain revenues when facing fierce tariff with incumbents with Deep pockets

2. Content : Content would be huge market by 2013 and mobile the first point to acquire a customer.

3. SMS : SMS would remain a key for next 5-6 years , considering basics handsets prevalence (lower buying capacity) and rural market acquisition by Telecom operators

4. Gaming (Though it can be broadly categorized as part of content) : Online (Cloud) Gaming could be long term prospective but for next 2 years its not gonna create sustained business model but more of brand building exercise.

A great product would be something built involving all the above, as its difficult for VAS companies considering MO billing to play around with business models at present so in turn operators are controlling the cost. Focus should be on partnership and billing mechanism (Mchek or ngpay) out of Telecom’s premise where in business can play around with the cost. Other way to looking at is going B2B way and offer apps through Telecom app stores and let them promote it. This would reduce exposure and risks. One concern would be there are thousands of apps available with OVI, Blackberry and iphones that it would get difficult to come with a new app and the plus would be that there are very few apps available catering directly to indian consumer so its more of customizing available apps to indian consumer and making big money.

The issue that is of concern for consumers is, despite of DOT’s indication that they are looking forward to 4G and auctions would again take place, then it really indicates that 3G services are expected to be priced quite higher then expected i.e. No business would shell out close to 10,000 crore and not leverage it in profit.

India offers market for replication of their prior products at low costs.

For now probably its time for competitive VAS , here comes a venture from one of India’s leading publishing houses Hindustan Times (HT). Setup on the lines of India Times 58888 , HT Media leased 54242 shortcode to offer their services. Over the past i have been highlighting the point that the bigger game is for content space here in India and publishing houses like HT or TOI have deep pockets & generates GB’s of content daily , by getting connected to Telecoms they would be able to reach the Bottom Line and would drive the cost and in turn competition in Telecom VAS offerings.

Going with the faster time to market launch , save costs and offer best services HT media has taken up the Technology Platform from Velti. Velti Offers wide range of solutions and Operates with 36 Countries to provide Telecom Platforms. Some of their other prominent clients includes Orange, Vodafone & MTS. Please refer details:

The Biggest SMS Game Ever

Under the title ‘SMS Game for Millions’, Velti organized and launched the biggest SMS promotion ever in Russia for mobile operator MTS. The promotion lasted three months, giving away $6 million in total cash prizes: $35,000 every day, $100,000 every Sunday, and a Grand Prize of $1 million.

‘SMS Game for Millions’ was largely advertised on main Russian TV channels across the country.

Participants were sending premium SMS messages, answering the questions, and collecting points to claim the prizes. The top scorer won.

A sophisticated mechanism of dynamic dialogues and bonus incentives was used to motivate participants, retain them in the game, and reactivate past users.

MTS is the largest operator in the country with over 55 million subscribers and between the months of May to August, MTS gave away $6 million in total cash prizes with 16.2 interactions per person and a 5% participation rate of subscribers.

The Gold SMS Challenge

Dubai-based mobile operator du wanted to launch an interactive, SMS-based contest to give their subscribers a chance to win gold—real gold! Velti was ready to help with the “SMS Gold Challenge.”

du subscribers received quiz questions by sending an SMS to a dedicated short-code, and received 20 points for correct answers, 10 points for incorrect answers, and 50 points for sending their profile information. Awards included daily draws for 50g of gold, 25g of gold for twice-weekly “Magic Minutes” instant winners, and 100g of gold for the weekly top scorers. Participants with more than 200 points were eligible for a grand monthly prize of 1kg of gold. In all, du awarded 9kg of gold.

du’s campaign achieved an 11.3% penetration rate among subscribers, with an average of 18.3 interactions per user. The campaign’s strong success led to a four-week extension, promoted with a television commercial.

Linkedin has a come a long way, filling up the gap for an almost intelligent (right now linkedin is automatonlike) professional connectivity app. Though its based on the model of social networks but delivers on the expectations to a certain extent where social networks for fun are more prominent.

Linkedin as a business model have evolved over the past starting as free to use app to build in userbase, then releasing professional subscription delivering added benefits and now almost adding value to companies, to hire right candidates at reduced HR Resources. Linkedin has impacted the business of job portals especially in India, where i would expect in Tier 1, Tier 2 categories 30-40% recruitment could involve linkedin.

Recently Linkedin Also started delivering customized paid ads.

As a next steps towards leveraging the potential strength linkedin would probably work towards getting an online support/consulting environment available where people would have to pay incentive to get answers whether in business/technology/operations/finance. The amount could vary on depending the profile of the guy answering/advising and even various models of points redemption/ generation/exchange could be worked out and even the ratings of profile would serve out a purpose to provide more authenticity to the online platform.

Where as on the other side, Individuals starting out can also decide to answer/advice for free or for points or ratings and then leverage the network to generate earnings.

This platform does have its pros and cons. I do believe that market is ready for this app. it can add real benefits to especially Individuals, SME’s & Startups with constrained budgets and can also generate a whole new breed of Individual contributers/Professionals generating their day-to-day earnings through this app.

Internet Penetration is gaining momentum in India, and Mobile Internet is leading the way with around 150 million wireless data subscribers who are accessing internet through wireless (GSM and CDMA) networks.According to recent TRAI reports There were 13.54 million internet subscribers on 31st March 2009 as compared to 11.09 million on 31st March 2008.The number of broad-band connections on 31st March 2009 was 6.22 million compared to 3.87 million for the same period during previous year.

All these stats does provide a trigger for companies venturing into the space as it involves low initial investment and these figures will only take upside when WiMax or 3G rolls out pan India.

Refer nimbuzz, fring ,ebuddy or Digsby , all these services provide single account to access your various other social networking or messenger accounts. Currently Nimbuzz seems to leading the race by Tying up with Tata NTT Docomo, and recently quoted to be adding a subscriber every 2 secs.

Business around is long term where in right now these products are in customer base building/acquistion stage and would later leverage the customer base strength to role out more innovations around it. The bigger game in this specific domain seems to be heading towards the Huge Content market.

Currently Nimbuzz specifically seems to earning either through offering the product through Tata NTT Docomo or ads (google adsense). In terms of long term business models i do expect these application to transform into organized content delivery platform and probably ads & other stuff would be delivered to individuals as a Mobile based Feed/User accounts & alert functionality or even start offerring p2p gaming on mobile internet.

Not a new concept but again the market opportunity here in India, where volume matter’s and buying potential is the key barrier for any organization trying to leverage India Opportunity. Microsoft has launched its Multipoint Server specifically targeting the Education sector , which many believes would surpass Telecom boom.

Microsoft has tied up with HP to offer the whole MultiSeat Solution for Education Institutes. This setup uses’s the computing power of one central resource to power others connected to it.It would improve student’s access to computers and reduce costs, besides it has a drawback as well , if the central machine fails then the whole system goes down.

Here’s a reference setup:

This product from MS does hold a lot of potential especially here in India where Educational Budgets are low and Volume Requirements are high. Its only been 3 weeks and they have cracked around 13+ customers in India. Way to go MS !!!!

Web 2.0 Suicide Machine gives you an option to clear all your history, kill your fake virtual friends as well, though currently its only active for Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and LinkedIn. Besides using this app the process would take around 52 min. whereas manually it might take around 9+ hrs.

Till today 3,772 people have used it to clear all the history on respective social networks,282,484 friends have been unfriended and 496,314 tweets have been removed since launching.

LBS(Location Based Services) have gathered lots of hype off late, but do they really work as expected or as in concepts?

Most of the firms demonstrated it with small range networks like bluetooth but didn’t really click with users. Now PlaceCast a US Based firm has come up with a concept of geo-fencing,which draws a virtual perimeter around a particular location. When someone steps into the geo-fenced area, a text message is sent, but only if consumers have opted in to receive messages. To determine a cell phone’s location, Placecast uses techniques including a phone’s GPS signal, location data provided by carriers to companies that sell it to Placecast and information gleaned from triangulating the phone’s distance to cell towers.

India with its huge consumer base and Mobile user’s can prove out to be the apt place for this product, though it would have to address privacy issues as well , when they decide to launch in India as well, besides dealing with complexity of Indian Telecom Operators Infrastructure.

Placecast over the past have invested close to 5 years in development and filed 10 patents, so does seem to have loads of potential.
